DEC 20, 2001 BUSINESS WIRE:

( BW)(TX-PLAYAPP) PlayApp Working with Independent Record Labels to Develop and Sell Music & Book PlayApps

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 20, 2001--PlayApp, LLC, Internet distributor of protected PlayApps, in the form of digital books, music, videos, games, business apps, and streaming channels, announced today that they are working with independent record labels Goodnight Kiss Music and DigitalPressure.com (online division of peermusic) to develop and sell protected multi-media music and book PlayApps.

"Consumers want quality, feature-rich digital products that are portable and collectable, similar to DVDs, which are in hot demand today. PlayApps fill this need, and it's absolutely essential that music, book, and video publishers have access to this technology to make a successful, profitable transition to the wild west digital environment of the Internet. Replacing physical products like CDs, DVDs, books, etc. with portable digital files requires revolutionary technology, not simply more mass-consumer subscriptions and ad-based media. What consumers want, are digital products they can collect, just like what they're doing with MP3 music and DivX video files," says John Willsey, inventor of PlayApps and PlayApp Keys.

PlayApps are single file, multi-media programs that are protected with a single, keychain-sized USB hardware key (PlayApp Key) that is purchased by or provided to consumers. PlayApps are portable, collectable and can be stored on any digital storage device or disk connected to a PC. They're open-format, which means they can be programmed to handle any type of current or future codecs, these include proprietary or non-proprietary audio and visual formats. PlayApps can be sold as file downloads or on CD, DVD, etc. disks in retail stores or mail order. They can be developed for the Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems, although only Windows is being developed for at this time.

In the future, one innovative feature that could be added to purchased PlayApps is the ability to extract content (i.e. songs as MP3 or Ogg Vorbis files, stories as RTF files, etc.), for use on handheld PCs, MP3 players, etc. Another feature could connect users to a publishers website and retrieve the latest news or fan info on an artist, or interact live with other fans.
The first PlayApp to come from these new independent record label working relationships is the "And To All A Goodnight" combination music/book Christmas PlayApp from Goodnight Kiss Music. It contains twelve 192kbps encrypted MP3 song files and a bonus, Charles Dickens story "A Christmas Carol". When played, each song has a different Christmas picture automatically shown. Also included are the lyrics to all the songs and links to Goodnight Kiss Records for those interested in other products they have.

"We are thrilled to have access to an enhanced and encoded way to present our music online," says Goodnight Kiss owner, Janet Fisher. "It is almost impossible to find the protected platform PlayApps brings to the marriage of the traditional music world and the future of music Internet."

The first PlayApps from DigitalPressure.com will contain music from composer-keyboardist Michael Hoppe (www.michaelhoppe.com). Hoppe, whose recordings have garnered high praise from critics and fans alike, composes exceptionally melodic and evocative works. His music has been featured in numerous shows ranging from "The Sopranos" to Oprah Winfrey. Initially combining scenic pictures and eventually videos with Hoppe's music, these PlayApps will offer an additional visual sensation and interactivity consumers will enjoy.

"It is most exciting to see PlayApp visualize my music in this manner. Such treatment can only enhance music and benefit the customer," says Michael Hoppe.

"DigitalPressure.com is always looking for innovative opportunities to distribute and promote its catalog," says Jonathan Kehl, Vice President at DigitalPressure.com, "and I am impressed with PlayApp's unique technology, which provides our artists and content partners with the secure distribution that we desire while offering the consumer a simple, convenient listening experience."

With the introduction of PlayApps, a complete solution now exists for artists, publishers, consumers, and retailers. Artists and publishers get the security they insist on, consumers get the ease of use and portability they've been demanding, and retailers get digital products they can sell through stores, mail order, or file downloads.
